Tread depth
Use the wear indicators moulded into the grooves, or a depth gauge. If you are close, plan the replacement rather than discovering it during the first winter storm.
Wear pattern
Uneven wear — one shoulder gone, feathered edges, cupping — affects handling and noise long before the tire is bald, and it points at alignment, pressure or suspension. Fix the cause with the tires.
Damage and age
Cuts, bulges, sidewall damage and repeated pressure loss mean replacement. Rubber also hardens over years even at low mileage, which matters on cars that sit.
