Why noise is so obvious in a Tesla
There is no engine noise to mask anything. What remains is wind noise and tire noise, and below highway speeds tire noise dominates. Coarse concrete freeway surfaces — much of Los Angeles — make it worse.
What makes a tire quiet
Tread block arrangement and pitch sequencing spread noise energy across frequencies instead of concentrating it in a hum. Sidewall and belt construction control how much of that reaches the cabin. Wider, lower-profile tires on larger wheels usually generate more noise than narrower, taller ones.
Acoustic foam
Some tires include a foam layer bonded to the inner liner to damp the air cavity resonance you hear as a low drone. It works, and it changes how a puncture must be repaired — worth knowing before a repair is attempted.
Trade-offs to expect
Quiet tires usually give up a little dry grip and steering sharpness compared with performance tires. For most commuting Tesla owners that is an easy trade. If you drive canyon roads hard, we will say so.
